Man appears in court charged with 2019 murder of Polish national in Lanarkshire park

A man appeared in court in private charged with the brutal death of a Polish national.

Rafal Lyko was found in a burnt out car in a Blantyre park three years ago.

On Monday, Thomas Wilson, of Glasgow, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court charged with the murder of the 36-year-old.

Cops launched a manhunt after the body of Rafal was found in a burnt out stolen Mercedes within a car park at Greenhall Park on February 11, 2019, following reports of an explosion.

During their investigation, officers discovered that he had arrived at Edinburgh Airport just two days earlier on Saturday, February 9 from his home in Poland.

From there Mr Lyko travelled to the Tayside area to visit relatives, but not much was known of his whereabouts after that.

The Mercedes GLE car that Rafal was found in was known to police as having been stolen from the Oxgangs Road area of Edinburgh earlier that year on Thursday, January 24, 2019.

At the time of his death, officers said the stolen car had been spotted near East Kilbride town centre, and in the Halfway area of Cambuslang before then being found on fire in a quiet area of Blantyre.

Wilson made no plea or declaration during his appearance and the case was committed for further examination.

The 25-year-old was released on bail.
