Man allegedly fires gun in shopping centre daylight robbery in Sydney's south-west

A man is on the run and another has been charged after an armed robbery at a jewellery store in south-west Sydney yesterday.

About 4:40pm, two men entered Carnes Hill Marketplace.

Police say one man went into Diamond Hill Jewellers and threatened an employee with a gun, while the second man kept watch outside.

The man in the store allegedly fired a shot before smashing several glass display cabinets inside the store with a hammer.

The men then ran from the scene carrying jewellery.

Footage shot by a member of the public shows the moment the men fled the shopping centre wearing black clothing and a face covering.

They both rode away on a motorbike.

Families were captured on video leaving the shops in a hurry as police arrived.

Police managed to track down the alleged robbers shortly after while riding the motorbike on South Liverpool Road in Busby.

One man got away while the other man threatened to shoot officers before eventually dropping the gun.

Police arrested and charged the 23-year-old with multiple offences including armed robbery.

A search of the man revealed he was carrying some of the stolen jewellery along with ammunition and methylamphetamine.

The second man allegedly involved in the robbery remains on the run.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Evans said officers "bravely" tackled the first man to the ground, but the second man escaped.

"Boys from Liverpool City Police area command located that motorcycle with the two offenders and called upon them to stop," Detective Superintendent Evans said.

"They disregarded this direction by the police and the male pillion passenger … jumped off the rear of that motorcycle and commenced a run.

"He pointed that firearm that was used in the prior robbery at police … they quickly tackled that offender and subdued him."

A large-scale police search across Sydney is continuing.

Police say the man poses no threat to public safety.

The first man, who was arrested, was refused bail and will appear in court later today.

Police say no-one was harmed during the robbery.
