Man admits catching train from Tier 3 to city with less restrictions - to go for a pint

A man has admitted travelling from a Tier 3 area in order to go for a drink in a pub during a TV interview.

The thirsty pubgoer, who was not named, told BBC Look York he had got a train from Leeds to York, which is in Tier 2, Leeds Live reports.

In Tier 3 areas, all pubs are shut except for takeaways, but in Tier 2, pubs and bars are allowed to stay open.

In Tier 2, customers must buy a substantial meal with their drink and punters then have to leave once the meal is over.

The man said: "I've come to York to have a drink today because they were opening late and [I] just come across on train."

The man admitted what he had done in a TV interview (BBC)

The BBC reporter then said to the man: "It's not against the law but technically you're not supposed to do that.

"Are you aware of that?"

The Leeds man then responded: "Yeah but it's not against the law you've just said that."

Recently, North Yorkshire Police said drivers travelling from Tier 3 into Tier 2 areas  could face "enforcement action" for non-essential journeys.

The force warned residents in Tier 3 areas such as Leeds and Bradford to stay away.

That is unless they need to travel into a Tier 2 area for work or education.
