At an earlier hearing Marshall denied the offence and had been due to stand trial in November but has now changed his plea to guilty.
After the incident the 48-year-old victim was taken to hospital where she was initially in a critical condition.
50-year-old Marshall appeared at Liverpool Crown Court and was further remanded in custody by the Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Andrew Menary, QC to await sentence on October 29.
The case was adjourned to enable a psychiatric report to be finished and a pre-sentence report prepared to consider if the defendant poses a danger.
