A young man accused of being part of a group that murdered Jake Roarty during a targeted home invasion at Argenton in April has been refused bail.
Daniel Cavanagh, 22, of Birmingham Gardens, did not appear in a bail division court on Thursday, a day after he was arrested by Homicide Squad detectives during sweeping raids.
Cavanagh did not enter a plea or apply for bail, and his matter was adjourned to Newcastle Local Court in September.
Roarty, 38, died in the early hours of April 19 this year after he was allegedly savagely bashed and stabbed by a group of men who kicked down the door to a townhouse in Montgomery Street.
The group of attackers are believed to have arrived in a vehicle outside the house on the corner of Waratah Street and Montgomery Street about 4am before forcing their way inside.
They were wearing dark clothing and face coverings and at least one was armed with a knife.
Roarty was stabbed multiple times and left for dead while the group fled.
Emergency services were called and paramedics were treating Roarty and attempting to transport him to an ambulance on a stretcher when he died on the footpath outside his home.
Detectives launched an investigation into the alleged murder, focusing on what led Roarty to become the target of a brutal home invasion.
In June, police appealed for information and released CCTV footage from a service station at Mayfield to help identify a man.
Following further extensive inquiries, police raided homes at Birmingham Gardens, Waratah and Windale about 6am on Wednesday.
Cavanagh was arrested at the home at Birmingham Gardens and later charged with murder.
Police say investigations are ongoing and they are working to identify other members of the group.
