Man, 28, detained in Cavan following attempted ATM theft in Virginia last week

A 28-year-old man is being held at a Co Cavan garda station following the attempted theft of an ATM last week.

Gardai foiled an attempt to steal the ATM located beside the Riverfront Hotel on the main street of Virginia, Co Cavan last Wednesday.

One man, who was arrested at the scene, allegedly had a JCB and a trailer lined up in front of the ATM before officers swooped.

Gardai, who had been in regular contact with the PSNI, had an intelligence-led operation in place and pounced at 2.30am.

It is understood officers found up to €300,000 and strongly suspect it is connected to previous robberies.

A garda spokesperson said: "In relation to the attempted theft of an ATM at Main St, Virginia, Co. Cavan on Wednesday 14th August 2019, a 28 year old male who was arrested at the scene, is currently detained at Bailieborough Garda Station."

Two other men, aged 25 and 61, have been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Investigations are ongoing.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who travelled on the Virginia/Bailieborough Road and/or were in Virginia town between 1am and 3am last Wednesday to contact them at the incident room at Bailieborough Garda station.

They are particularly keen for any drivers who were passing with dashcam footage to contact them on 042 9694570 or call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or contact any Garda station.
