Man, 24, has part of his skull removed after horror crash on his way to chippy

A man was left unable to speak, eat and walk after a late night drive to a chippy for his dinner ended in tragedy.

Ryan Womack, 24, was gravely injured and can barely recognise his mother after the car accident in October 2018.

He suffered serious brain damage and became paralysed and is now living in a nursing home in Ormskirk, West Lancashire.

Ryan, who works as a tree surgeon, left his friend's house to get some food from a nearby chippy in Manchester, reported Lancs Live .

He was said to have misjudged a bend and hit three parked cars before smashing into a nearby garden.

Mum Helen said: "We were told that he was touch and go. The police told us we had to go to the hospital because he might not make it.

"We arrived in Manchester and I remember the doctor telling us that: 'If we do this surgery he will never be Ryan again.'

"I just told him to do what he had to do, I would do anything for him to live."

Doctors performed a craniotomy on Ryan, which involves removing a section of his skull to relieve the swelling on his brain.

It saved Ryan's life but the operation left him unable to speak or eat.

He has been in and out of assisted-living homes and rehab centres, it is reported.

There were plans to have a plate put into his head after the craniotomy but the plate got infected and had to be removed.

Ryan has suffered from several more infections and illness throughout the last few months due to various operations and still lives without part of his skull.

Helen is now trying to raise £10,000 to care for her son at home. The money includes building an extension in their house to give Ryan a downstairs bedroom, toilet and care facilities.

She said: "I don't think he really recognises us.

"He recognises me as his mum I think, he sometimes holds my hand and plays with my hair but other times there is nothing there."

Helen has also organised several upcoming events including a Fifa Tournament as well as Bamber Bridge family fun day and It's A Knockout Roadshow at Grove Park (both happening this weekend August 3-4).

Helen has asked that if anyone can donate, please visit  GoFundMe  page to help get Ryan home.

Greater Manchester Police issued a  statement  following Ryan's crash saying that they were appealing for more information as to what had happened in.

They have since confirmed that there is no ongoing investigation as a result of the incident.
