A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker after allegedly spitting at police following an incident at a supermarket.

Officers in Leicester were called at 6.35pm on Good Friday to a report of a man seen in the Aylestone Road area carrying a small metal pole.

Leicestershire Police said in a statement: “Officers attended and, after an area search, located a man nearby who was subsequently arrested.

“During his arrest, the man spat at officers.

“A further report was received which stated that prior to police arrival, the man had been at the Tesco Express on Lutterworth Road causing issues.”

It is alleged a man was attempting to open car doors, asking for money and was seen spitting.

Sergeant Ben Widdowson, who is appealing for witnesses, said: “We believe there were several members of the public in the vicinity, in particular at the Tesco Express, who may have seen what happened and could assist greatly with our investigation.

“It’s important we build a complete picture of what happened so if you saw what happened, or the events leading up to it, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

It is the latest in a string of alleged attacked on emergency service workers, including police and paramedics, during the coronavirus lockdown.
