Mamdani makes defiant statement after explosives thrown near home

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has spoken out after improvised explosive devices were thrown near his home on Saturday (7 March).

The attack is being investigated as an act of “ISIS-inspired terrorism,” NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday.

Ms Tisch confirmed two men are accused of throwing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) into a crowd during Saturday's protest, which took place near Gracie Mansion. She added that preliminary testing found that the devices were not hoaxes or smoke bombs but working improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that could have caused serious injury or death.

Outside the mayor's residence on Monday, Mr Mamdani said: "New York City will never tolerate violence, whether from protests or counterprotests."

Two people are in custody for their alleged roles in the confrontation but they have not been charged, Ms Tisch said.
