Mamdani doubles down on demand for US to arrest Netanyahu for ‘war crimes’

  • New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has reiterated his demand for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's arrest for "war crimes" if he enters the United States, labelling him the "architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people."
  • Mamdani acknowledged that New York City lacks the independent legal authority to enforce an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant but urged the US federal government to join the ICC and execute such a warrant.
  • The mayor's call follows a statement from Donald Trump, who asserted that Netanyahu "will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America."
  • The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes, including starvation as a method of warfare, and crimes against humanity, which Netanyahu denies as "antisemitic."
  • Israel's ambassador to the United Nations criticised Mamdani, accusing him of antisemitism and supporting Hamas, while Israel consistently denies allegations of genocide and dismisses UN reports as "grossly distorted."
