Malik Tillman's heart 'wasn't in' Rangers transfer as compensation deal hailed as 'good business'

Malik Tillman's heart wasn't in a move to Rangers and that's why it has worked out as good business to land compensation.

That's the verdict of Stephen McGinn, who discussed the latest with the USA international. Giovanni van Bronckhorst swooped for the Bayern Munich man on loan last summer with the Ibrox club holding an exclusive option to make the deal permanent. However, the Bundesliga giants have moved the goalposts amid interest from other sides but that at least means compensation heading for Govan.

The German outfit will pay Rangers £1million plus 10 per cent of any eventual transfer fee this summer reported to be on top. Losing out on the player may well come as a blow to Michael Beale but for McGinn, he believes it has worked out well and questioned whether he witnessed enough from him in the big games against Celtic or cup finals that would justify shelling out the fee agreed at the time.

He told the Go Radio Football Show: "It sounds like great business, in terms of having that option if they want to do it but they are compensated if the option is taken out of their hands.

"It's a good bit of business, especially when it seemed the player's heart wasn't at Ibrox. He has bags of potential.

"But did I see enough in him that he would go and grab these Celtic games and cup finals by the scruff of the neck to say 'you need to pay £5million'? I'm not so sure. They move on and it's an area of the park where they are strong."

Tillman played 43 times in all competitions for Rangers last season netting 12 goals and providing five assists.
