Shooting at L.A.-area clinic: Nurse wounded, patient in custody

Jan. 26--A man was arrested Monday afternoon after a nurse was shot inside a mental health urgent care facility in Willowbrook, officials said.

The nurse was taken to an area hospital after he suffered a gunshot wound, said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. His condition was not immediately known.

The 20-year-old man was a patient at the facility at Exodus Mental Health Urgent Care Clinic in the 12000 block of Wilmington Avenue, across from Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. The incident began about 1 p.m. when the man became agitated, she said.

Two hospital security guards were checking on him to try to calm him down when an altercation ensued, Nishida said. At some point during the struggle, she said, the man yelled out, "I have a gun."

Moments later, the nurse tried to help and was shot.

The patient was immediately taken into custody.

It was unclear if the suspect shot the nurse, Nishida said.

The Sheriff's Department's Century Station is investigating the shooting.
