Making the cut on the PGA Tour is going to be even harder next season

PGA Tour players who make the cut each week can expect to see a tiny boost in payouts for the 2019-20 season, but the competition to make the cut will be even fiercer.

As reported by Golf Digest, the PGA Tour policy board has approved a change to the cut line, from the usual top 70 and ties to the top 65 and ties. In addition, the secondary cut (used after three rounds if more than 78 players make the first cut) will be eliminated.

The change is beneficial for the PGA Tour’s elite players who typically make the cut each week, as the event purse will be distributed to fewer players. Players in the middle of the pack, however, will have a reduced chance of surviving the cut and earning a check for the week.

Smaller fields on the weekend should also help ensure that events won’t have players starting on multiple tees, or playing in threesomes during the final rounds.

“It’s a capitalist sport,” said Paul Casey, a member of the tour’s Player Advisory Council. “You play well, you do well.

“I’ve been on both sides of it, and I still firmly believe you make your own success, so I’m a fan of it. As long as we’re not taking away opportunities to get into events, and I don’t think this is taking away earnings or opportunities for players. This is the right thing to do.”
