THE majority of Scots believe that Scotland should remove the monarchy and become a republic, new polling has found.
The Find Out Now survey, run for The National from September 15-21, found that 53% of Scots backed removing the monarch as Scotland’s head of state and becoming a republic instead.
The data comes from a series of polls commissioned by The National, carried out by Find Out Now, which included topics our readers wanted to ask the Scottish public, including a mandate for a referendum, Holyrood 2026 voting intention, and views on immigration.
The question of whether Scotland should remove the monarchy and become a republic was the most suggested by The National’s readers.
In total, 36% of people said the monarchy should be removed as soon as possible, with 12% saying in the next 10 years, and 5% in more than 10 years.
On the other side, 47% of respondents said the monarch should never be removed from Scotland.
When all three responses that back Scotland becoming a republic on whatever timescale are summed, 53% of Scots back removing the monarchy.
A sub-sample of the poll found that 33% of the age group 30-39 said the monarch should be removed as soon as possible, while 63% of the age group 75+ said never.
Scottish Greens MSP Patrick Harvie said that the monarchy is a “ceremonial relic from an archaic society” and that the polling shows that the royal family is “outdated” and losing public support as time goes by.

“With all of the scandals, it is unsurprising that there is a growing majority of Scots who feel the same way,” he said.
“It is no secret that the Scottish Greens are a republican party and would abolish the monarchy in a heartbeat. Frankly, the gross showcase of wealth and extravagance at royal dinners and events is completely at odds with the problems that millions of families in this country are facing.
“At a time when more people are having to rely on food banks or drowning in debt, it feels particularly distasteful to be giving one of the richest families in the world various tax breaks and trappings simply because of their bloodline.”
Harvie added: “It is long past time to abolish the monarchy and ensure that we are all equal citizens in an independent republic.”
On Tuesday, The National revealed that Scots would vote to leave the Union if a new independence referendum were held tomorrow.
Find Out Now found that with undecided voters removed, Yes posted a four-point lead over No, by 52% to 48%.
It comes after polling last year by Norstat found that support for Scottish independence would rise to 59% from 54% if it meant Scotland would be a republic.
Campaign group Our Republic said The National’s polling on Wednesday confirms their own findings from last year that Scots want to be represented by an elected head of state and not a “distant, unaccountable family of aristocrats”.

A spokesperson for Our Republic said: “It has been true for some time that our political landscape does not reflect the views of the public on this vital issue of who rules over us - with few in Parliament willing to stand up to Charles' power and his family's demand for prestige and privilege at the expense of the rest of us.
“His family enjoys meetings with the Government kept secret, exemptions carved out of our laws for their estate, parades and pomp to lavish their egos at our expense, passing around titles of our cities as birthday and wedding gifts – all whilst robbing us of democratic representation on the international stage.
“Our political parties need to catch up with the people they represent and demand change.
They added: “An end to Andrew's staining of the name of Inverness by association, an end to one law for us and another for them, an end to secret backroom lobbying of our Government, an end to our parliamentarians pledging loyalty to them before us, and, finally, an end to the Monarchy itself.”
Find Out Now surveyed a representative sample of 1282 Scottish voters between September 15 and 21, 2025.
