Majority of fans try to drown out boos after England stars take the knee in Middlesbrough

England and Romania players were booed ahead of the international friendly at Middlesbrough as the players took the knee before the game.

The boos were drowned out by applause but the jeers were impossible to ignore for the second England game at the Riverside.

England boss Gareth Southgate has made his views clear on the pre-game gesture to raise awareness and support the movement of racial equality.

Before the game Southgate had said to ITV: "We can't control the response.

"We are very clear on our stand. We are united as a staff and a playing group."

BBC Five Live pundit Stephen Warnock also heard the boos from the commentary box and reflected on air: "The boos came and then it was overcrowded by the claps and rightly so.

"I agree with Gareth.

"He's trying to do what's right for the players and spoke excellently about it this week and we heard from the fans there that the majority of fans agree with what the players are doing."
