Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza face losing green list status after surge in cases

The Balearic Islands' green list status could be at risk after Covid cases soared in the holiday hotspots.

On Sunday, Health officials said there had been 303 cases in the previous 24 hours, 70 more than the 233 notified the previous day.

The positivity rate is also up, from 6.76 per cent on Saturday to nearly 8.5 per cent on Sunday. The number of Covid sufferers in hospital intensive care is 14, ten in Majorca, one in Menorca and three in Ibiza.

The accumulated Covid incidence rate has leapt to nearly 130 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, more than triple what it was at the end of May, The Mirror report.

The Balearic Islands, which includes popular destinations such as Ibiza, Menorca, Majorca and Formentera, were moved to the quarantine-free green list last week which means travellers do not have to self-isolate on their return.

Martin Lewis' blunt warning to anyone looking for Covid summer 2021 travel insurance:

British holidaymakers have started flying to the Balearics in large numbers since last Wednesday when it became one of Europe’s few green list destinations for the UK government.

Thousands of UK holidaymakers arrived in Ibiza by the planeload last week. Planes were packed with UK tourists desperate to reach the White Isle after a Covid-enforced absence.

Portugal was removed off Britain’s green list last month, meaning travellers now have to self-isolate at home for 10 days. Many holidaymakers and travel firms expressed anger when the announcement was made, as it came just 17 days after the ban on international leisure travel was lifted.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will give a press conference detailing the future in England of the one metre plus rule, face coverings, and working from home, alongside the findings of reviews into social distancing and certification.

The Welsh Government has already issued notes of caution about the changes expected in England, as have scientists. The next review in Wales is on July 15.
