Major Winnipeg carbon monoxide leak leaves 46 people in hospital

Dozens of people have been rushed to hospital after a major carbon monoxide leak at a motel.

Local reports suggest 15 people are fighting for their lives after the gas leak at the Super 8 Motel in Winnipeg, Canada.

Two children are included in the patients taken to hospital but both are said to be stable.

The highest carbon monoxide reading found in the hotel was 385 parts per million (PPM). Symptoms become noticeable at 70 ppm.

The leak impacted 52 people and one dog.

Police and emergency services are on the scene.

City of Winnipeg Fire Chief John Lane said the call came in at 10.19am (local time).

The hotel’s owner, Justin Schinkel, said something of this magnitude has never happened at the motel before.

She told Global News Canada : “It’s the worst imaginable feeling, all of a sudden… when something bad like this happens and you don’t know the extent of it.

"We’re just super happy that the first responders are so helpful and they’ve been able to get here so quick and help us out here."

Mr Lane said: “None of the patients were requiring resuscitation, none were intubated …. their carbon monoxide levels were such that they were in the critical category.”
