Major airline cuts free meals on flights - with passengers now facing an extra fee to dine

Hawaiian Airlines is ending one of the few remaining perks for economy travelers: complimentary meals on most flights between Hawaii and the mainland United States.

Starting July 1, Main Cabin passengers on most routes between Hawaii and the continental U.S. will no longer receive free meals. Instead, the airline is introducing a new pre-order dining program that allows travelers to purchase meals before their flight.

Passengers will be able to order meals through Hawaiian Airlines' website or mobile app beginning two weeks before departure and up to 20 hours before their flight. Prices are expected to range from about $10 to $17 per meal.

Flights between Honolulu and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, however, will continue to include a complimentary meal for Main Cabin passengers, according to the airline. The change is a significant shift for Hawaiian Airlines, which has long stood out among U.S. carriers for continuing to offer complimentary meals in economy on many long-haul routes.

“At the heart of this transformation is what has always defined Hawaiian Airlines: authentic Hawaiian hospitality,” Alisa Onishi, the Managing Director of Hawai‘i Marketing at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement. “We’re still going to keep the authentic parts of our hospitality, free beverages, free local snacks, (and) the sweet treat at the end of the flight. We’re really proud to offer this new option in our main cabin for our guests to explore and enjoy a little more from our island home.”

The new menu was created in partnership with Maui chef and James Beard Award finalist Sheldon Simeon and will feature dishes inspired by local Hawaiian flavors. Travelers can choose from meals such as mochiko chicken with garlic noodles, barbecue teriyaki chicken bento and corned beef hash with eggs. Meals will be made with fresh ingredients and prepared within 12 hours of departure, the airline said.

“For me, food is about sharing where you're from and the people who shaped you,” Simeon said in a statement. “This menu is inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Hawai‘i — comforting, familiar and full of heart. I’m excited to bring those dishes onboard so guests can experience a true taste of home, wherever they’re headed.”

The airline also plans to rotate menu selections throughout the year and add new dishes in the coming months. Gluten-free and plant-based options will also be available.

Members of the Huakaʻi by Hawaiian loyalty program, as well as travelers who join by June 24, will get their first two meals free.
