Maine West High School evacuated after ‘active shooter’ alarm apparently goes off by accident

Students at Maine West High School in suburban Des Plaines were evacuated Friday morning after an “active shooter” alarm apparently went off by accident, according to officials.

“No threat has been identified,” Maine Township High School District 207 said in a statement.

Police were called to the school at 1755 S. Wolf Road shortly before 10 a.m. after “there was an accidental push of the active shooter button or a short in the system that caused that alarm to go off,” Maine Township High School District 207 said in a statement.

“All students and staff are safe at Maine West,” the district said. “The police have cleared the building.”

The district said classes were canceled for the day and parents could pick up their children at the Prairie Lakes Community Center at 515 E. Thacker St. in Des Plaines.

“Staff from West (Maine) and the district are there to help with the reunification process and any questions,” the district said.

Reached by phone, a police official said officers arrived at the school about 9:55 a.m. and found no evidence of an active shooter.

There has been no report of injuries at this time,” the official said.
