Madurai Medical College dean relieved of post, put on waitlist

MADURAI: The Madurai Medical College dean, Dr A Rathinavel, was on Sunday relieved of his post and put on waiting list on the directions of the Tamil Nadu health department.

It came to light that during the white coat ceremony of first-year MBBS students at Madurai Medical College, the students were made to take the ‘Maharshi Charak Shapath’ oath instead of the Hippocratic oath.

“This action is highly condemnable and hence the dean was relieved of his post and put on a waiting list. Further, a departmental inquiry has also been initiated to probe into the violation of protocol on the directions of director of medical education Dr R Narayanababu and state health minister Ma Subramanian.

On Saturday, during the induction ceremony at Madurai Medical College, students were given their white coats by Tamil Nadu minister Palanivel Thiagarajan, after which the ‘Maharshi Charak Shapak’ oath was administered to the students instead of the Hippocratic oath. The minister also expressed shock over the new oath, which is recommended as per the new guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to be administered to the first year MBBS students.
