'Madness' - Sunderland fans react to Aiden McGeady's contract stand-off

Sunderland fans have reacted in disbelief to the news Aiden McGeady could miss the play-off decider against Lincoln City over a contract dispute.

The Republic of Ireland international has come in from the cold under Lee Johnson to re-establish himself as a key figure at the Stadium of Light.

However, the 35-year-old could miss Saturday's second-leg with Lincoln City as a result of a contract clause which would grant him an automatic 12-month extension.

McGeady's appearance at Sincil Bank was his 29th of the season, and a 30th would trigger a new one-year deal.

The winger is Sunderland's top earner and ChronicleLive understands the club are not prepared to sanction another deal with the potential for another campaign in League One.

Talks have taken place over a potential workaround which could see McGeady waive the clause and feature against the Imps, with an extension on the table if promotion is achieved.

But as it stands the club and the player are yet to reach an agreement, casting doubt over his availability for the return fixture on Wearside this weekend.

It is a scenario which has provoked debate among Sunderland fans, with many believing the winger should start regardless.

This is how Black Cats supporters reacted to the news of McGeady's contract stand-off:

'Madness'

'Play him'

'Shouldn't even be an issue'

'Petty'

'For me he starts'

'Fans will go mental'
