BHOPAL: The authorities of a government college in Datia have issued a public notice, restraining students from wearing "any kind of community-specific dress, like hijab", after Hindu outfits staged protests on campus.
There is absolute harmony in the college between students of all communities, principal of Government PG College, D R Rahul, told TOI. "It was only on February 14 that some outsiders came to the college and staged protests. They pressured us saying they would create a ruckus here if 'hijab' wasn't banned. It is under their pressure that such a notice was issued," Rahul said. tnn
Won't let the issue escalate further, says Datia collector
Datia is the home turf of MP home minister Narottam Mishra, who had categorically said on February 9 that "there is no plan to ban the hijab in the state".
On February 14, however, right wing activists went to the college and started a ruckus on seeing a few students in hijab. The principal then issued a notice asking students to refrain from wearing religious dresses.
The government has ordered an investigation into the incident. Datia collector Sanjay Kumar visited the college on Tuesday. "We are alert and vigilant. Whatever happened was due to some confusion. We will not let the issue escalate any further. There is absolute peace and harmony. Things were peaceful yesterday, too," Kumar told TOI. tnn
