'Mad' Manchester man cycles home from Glasgow on kid daughter's bike

A Manchester man is within sight of home after cycling all the way from Glasgow on his kid daughter's bike.

Wesley Hamnett was described by his other half as 'mad' after he suggested the unorthodox 220 mile trip in a bid to raise money for four charities very dear to him and his family.

Wesley was initially set to embark upon an epic cycle between Russia and Manchester on his road bike, however, that particular adventure has been postponed on account of coronavirus.

Wracking his brains as to how he could give back to everyone who had already come forward to donate, Wesley suggested his first ever trip to Scotland was on the cards, but after arriving in Glasgow by train, his route home would prove to be a little more taxing.

Could you cycle 220 miles on a kids' bile? (Wesley Hamnett)

Wesley told Glasgow Live: "I needed to do something just to show appreciation for people who have donated. I thought if I do Glasgow to Manchester on the road bike, that's just boring. I said to the missus: 'I'm going to do it, what do you think?' She went: 'you're mad, but just go for it!'.

"I'm going to be in my house today, hopefully 5pm, it's just an amazing feeling to be honest."

After six days on the road, barely any sleep, several buckled wheels and with a very sore back, Wesley says the people of Scotland have kept him going.

He added: "Glasgow - it's the first time I've ever been to Scotland - what a top place, the public have just been mint, honestly. I've been stopped by lots of people.

"I set off from Glasgow and literally, from that moment on, they kept me going.

"The wheels keep buckling obviously because of my weight. There's a place down in Moffat called Annandale Cycles. The first time the wheels buckled, the guy sorted me out - he swapped me wheels from his grandkid's bike, for free. That made my day, it nearly made me cry. That's how generous people have been.

"Someone in Lockerbie took me in for the night. The people of Scotland have just been amazing.

"It's all about positive mentality, trying to keep positive.

"The public keep beeping and waving and stopping and that is the bit that keeps you going."

Wesley is supporting Macmillan Cancer Support, Christie Charitable Fund, British Heart Foundation and Wythenshawe Hospitals MFT Charity.
