French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his concerns about the proposed trade deal between the European Union and Mercosur during a forum in Sao Paulo. Macron emphasized that the current agreement is outdated and needs to be reworked to address climate change issues. He stated that the deal, negotiated 20 years ago, is unfavorable for both parties and called for a new agreement that considers environmental and health standards.

Macron's opposition to the deal stems from his belief that South American producers must adhere to the same standards as Europeans, particularly regarding pesticides. He highlighted the importance of incorporating diversity and climate considerations into the agreement to create a responsible trade deal for a new generation.

While in Brazil, Macron engaged in discussions with Brazilian executives and government officials, including Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. Alckmin emphasized the need for reciprocity in trade agreements and highlighted the potential benefits of opening markets between the EU and Mercosur.

Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced a joint plan to invest 1 billion euros in the Amazon region, with a focus on protecting the rainforest. The investment will be distributed over the next four years through collaboration between Brazilian banks and France's investment agency.

The French president's visit to Brazil included discussions on various economic and environmental issues, with a focus on strengthening cooperation between the two countries. Macron's trip will conclude with further meetings in Brasilia to continue the dialogue with Brazilian officials.
