Singer Mabel has said her mother Neneh Cherry “just cries all the time” because she is so excited about her daughter’s forthcoming marriage.
The Don’t Call Me Up singer said both her parents are thrilled about her engagement to record label executive Preye Crooks, adding: “I think the thing that they are proudest of is that I’m more able to be myself and express myself.”
Mabel, who has also had top 10 singles with Mad Love and Boyfriend, said her father, music producer Cameron McVey, was not impressed by the last person she dated.

She said: “I remember one time a guy pulled up to my dad’s house in a Lamborghini… and I remember my dad just being like, ‘Never bring a man to my house again until you’re serious’.”
Mabel, who was the first guest on Michael Dapaah’s new digital series Comfortably Speaking, which is broadcast on his YouTube channel, told him she finds awards ceremonies difficult.
The singer, who won the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist in 2020, said: “They’re like a pressure cooker for everything negative.
“It’s not really about celebrating, it’s just everybody there is anxious about what other people are thinking about them.
“I’m just like, ‘What do people think about me?'”
Mabel also said that coming from a family of successful musicians means some people think, “Oh, well, you’re a nepo baby so, like, you’re shit.”
