M62 slip road closed after HGV overturns near Rochdale

A person has been taken to hospital after a lorry overturned on the M62 in Rochdale.

Emergency services were called to the slip road at junction 20, for Thornham Island, shortly before 11am on Monday.

The slip road has been closed while fire crews, paramedics and motorway police deal with the incident.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed a person, thought to be the driver of the HGV, was taken to hospital.

The extent of their injuries are not yet known.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area after reports traffic is building up back to junction 19.

In a tweet, Highways England said: "The M62 eastbound exit slip road at J20 (Thornham Island) is currently closed due to a collision.

"Traffic officers and GMP traffic and North West Motorway Police are on en-route."

MancTraffic tweeted: "Slip road closed with emergency crews dealing with the overturned lorry.

"Head to J21 and either turn w/b to exit at j20 which is slow or use the A6193 Sir Isaac Newton Way into Rochdale.

"Queues to J19 and increasing."

A spokesperson for Manchester Fire Service said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic accident at 10.45am.

"On arrival crews found one person had self-rescued themselves.

"An ambulance had also attended.

"Fire officers carried out a scene assessment and made the area safe before handing it over to the highways management.
