M6 traffic: Huge lorry fire shuts motorway in both directions 'for hours'

A huge lorry fire shut down large parts of the M6 motorway in both directions causing miles of tailbacks.

Fire fighters were called to the blaze which took hold between junction 2, Coventry, and junction 1, Rugby, at around 3am this morning.

Great clouds of smoke filled the air and severely reduced visibility on the motorway.

Drivers were diverted away from the fire, which caused both north and southbound parts of the road to shut.

Highway England advised drivers to follow the 'hollow triangle' for northbound and southbound diversions.

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman tweeted: "Appliances from Bedworth, Nuneaton and the water bowser from Coleshill attending a severe lorry fire Junction 2 to 1, M6 causing massive delays."

The lorry fire has had a knock on effect on surrounding roads.

As of 7.40am there were long delays and queueing traffic on the Coventry Eastern Bypass in both directions, Coventry Telegraph reported.

Shortly after 7am Highways England Tweeted an update regarding the traffic situation.

"There are 30 minute delays on the southbound approach to this #M6 incident (above usual journey times) spanning 3 miles back to J3," the organisation wrote.

"Average speeds approaching J2 are 5 mph. Please allow extra journey time."

By 7.30am all lanes on the northbound side of the motorway had reopened, with traffic having eased to fairly normal levels.

On the other side of the road trapped traffic was being released via one lane only at around 7.50am.

As of 8am a live traffic map showed the going to be very slow from Ash Green in the north down to Stretton Under Fosse - a stretch of about six miles.
