M5 motorists targeted by Extinction Rebellion protest ahead of Bank Holiday weekend

Extinction Rebellion has said it plans to target the M5 motorway this weekend as part of the four-day protest which began earlier today.

Environmental activists have descended on the harbour front today (Friday, August 28) and will take part in a demonstration spanning multiple locations across the city until Monday.

Prince Street Bridge has already been blocked with a sculpture of an elephant while two activists were arrested after lying in the middle of the road on the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Somerset Live reports that the group is also planning to take the protest to major roads including the M5 and the A3030, with banners being displayed to target motorists.

A Frome XR spokesperson said protesters will release the banners on the A303, M5 and other major routes but will be on-site all day tomorrow (Saturday, August 29) to ensure banners do not fall into traffic.

In total, banners will be displayed in more than 60 locations on key routes into the region.

Sue Poole, a Bath Extinction Rebellion spokesperson, said: “We won’t be causing delays to motorists.

"We just think people should know that Exxon has been lying to us for decades and continue to spread suspicion about the effects of climate change on the planet.”
