M32 in Bristol closed after overnight crash

A stretch of the M32 was closed this morning, Sunday, after a serious collision late on Saturday night.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning (May 1) at around 12.42am.

The M32 heading northbound out of the city remains closed as of 7.30am, between junction 2 at Eastville and junction 1 for Filton and the A4174 ring road. There has not yet been information immediately available on the circumstances surrounding the collision, but with police closing the road for so long to allow collision investigators to examine the scene, it suggests it is a serious collision.

Updates: M32 closed northbound due to late-night crash

Emergency services remain at the scene and National Highways Traffic Officers are also assisting with traffic management. Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for a statement on this incident.

Traffic information service Inrix first announced the incident at 12.42am: "M32 Northbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident from J2 B4058 Stapleton Road (Eastville) to J1 A4174 (Hambrook). Shut heading out of Bristol." Trapped traffic has been released from the area according to Inrix.

In a statement, National Highways England said: "The M32 in Bristol is closed northbound between J2 (Horfield) and J1 (Filton) due to a collision. All emergency services are currently on scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management."

Motorists travelling behind the collision, who had already passed junction 2 for Eastville, before it was closed by police, were trapped behind the collision for more than three hours, before they were turned around by police and sent back to the Eastville junction.

Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra time for their journey. A diversion route has been put in place whereby northbound traffic should follow the solid triangle diversion symbol. Drivers are currently advised to exit the M32 at J2 and at the roundabout, take the third exit on to the B4469.

At the traffic lights, take the A432 and continue for approximately four miles to Wick Wick roundabout then take the first exit on to the A4174 westbound where road users can rejoin the M32 at J1. National Highways has said it expects the road to be cleared between 8.30am and 8.45am.
