M2 reopens after one person hospitalised as lorry leaves road in early morning crash

One person has been taken to hospital after a lorry left the road on the M2 on Tuesday morning.

The one-vehicle crash happened near Antrim Area Hospital shortly after 4.40am on January 10.

Police say the person was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

In an update on Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed the M2 northbound has now reopened between Dunsilly and Antrim Area Hospital.

In a social media post, NIFRS North said: "Crews from Antrim and Ballymena attended a road traffic accident involving a lorry on the motorway near Antrim Area Hospital.

"Colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and Police Antrim & Newtownabbey also attended.

"The crews used manual handling techniques and a ladder to remove the casualties to safety.

"There was an excellent team effort by everyone involved, especially in the adverse weather conditions."

In a later statement, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "NIFRS were called to a RTC involving 1 lorry. Firefighters rescued 2 casualties from the vehicle and they were taken into the care of Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. The incident was dealt with by 5.15am."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police received a report of a one-vehicle road traffic collision on the M2 motorway northbound between Dunsilly and Antrim Area Hospital shortly after 4.40am on Tuesday, January 10.

"One person was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening at this time."

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 04:52 on Tuesday, 10 January 2023 following reports of an RTC on the M2 area, Antrim.

"NIAS despatched one Ambulance to the incident.

"One patient was taken to Antrim Area Hospital by Ambulance."
