M&S to close city store after 'careful consideration'

MARKS & Spencer has confirmed it is set to close one of its stores in Glasgow as their lease comes to an end.

The M&S Simply Food located on Great George Street, just off Byres Road, will closed its doors on Saturday, October 25.

A spokesperson for the company said they will be closing the store when their lease ends after "careful consideration" as they want to give all customers the "best possible shopping experience".

They thanked customer for their support and said they will "continue working hard" to serve the community for the store's remaining weeks.

"After careful consideration and in-line with our lease ending, we will be closing our Byres Road store on Saturday, October 25.

"Thank you to all of our customers who have shopped with us at the store – we will continue working hard to serve you over the next few months and beyond then, from our nearby Glasgow west end and Anniesland stores."

In a post shared on Facebook group West End Community (Glasgow) about the news, one person commented: "Surprised at this as its always busy."

The decision comes amid several changes for the area, including the possible closure of a nearby car park in Lilybank Gardens, which currently offers 106 marks bays.

The second phase of the Byres Road public realm improvement works is also set to begin this month with work to take place between University Avenue and Great Western Road.

Improvements set to be delivered through the project include the widening and upgrading of pavements, the introduction of step-free crossings at side streets and new protected cycle paths.

The project is expected to be completed in August 2027.
