Memphis Depay scored from the penalty spot as Lyon drew 1-1 with Zenit St Petersburg in their Champions League group stage opener.
The hosts came into this match without a home win in the Champions League since 2016 after five consecutive draws.
But they faced a difficult task in turning that statistic into a positive after a dismal first-half display.
It was no surprise then when the visitors took the lead four minutes before the interval. Sardar Azmoun exchanged a neat one-two with strike partner Artem Dzyuba and toe-poked past Anthony Lopes.
But it was a moment of brilliance from Depay that got the French side level.
The winger skipped past the challenge from Yordan Osorio with a fine piece of skill and won a penalty after being tripped inside the area. Depay picked himself up, stepped up confidently and fired low into the corner.
Jeff Reine-Adelaide, the former Arsenal youth player, went close on two occasions as the home side pushed for a winner.
The hosts tried to break down the stubborn Zenit defence but to no avail as the wait for Lyon home victory in Europe's premier competition goes on.
