'Luxury train' coming to Bristol and Somerset - but 'scruffy' trainers banned

A "luxury train" with musicians and champagne is coming to Bristol and Somerset — with a fare of £275.

The Northern Belle’s 1930s-style Pullman carriages will take passengers from Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton stations on a trip to Cornwall.

Passengers on the train, which once formed part of the Orient Express group, will be able to enjoy a seven-course lunch with wine.

Jeans, t-shirts and scruffy trainers are banned on the train, said a Northern Belle spokesman.

Passengers will be greeted with a glass of champagne as they board over a red carpet at Temple Meads station.

The train, hauled by a heritage diesel locomotive, will then travel over the spectacular coastal line along the sea wall at Dawlish into Cornwall.

Strolling musicians will entertain passengers while they dine and an onboard conjuror will put on a magic performance.

The train is scheduled to leave Bristol at 11.35am on Friday, July 9, before picking up passengers from Taunton at 12.30pm. It is due back in Bristol at 5.30pm. The fare is £275.

Actor Bill Nighy travelled on the Northern Belle through the Yorkshire Dales in January, describing it as “the Grand Duchess of luxury travel”.

The Love Actually and Pirates of the Caribbean star said: “Our plush grand tour has been the experience of a lifetime.”

The Northern Belle spokesman said: "We like to think that as well as taking guests to Cornwall, we are transporting them back to the golden age of rail travel. A time when nothing was too good for pampered passengers.

“And so we do like people to dress quite smartly for the occasion, with gentlemen wearing a jacket and shirt.

“This will be the Northern Belle’s only visit to Bristol this year. So don’t miss the train!”
