The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Rick Ross Feat Jeezy: War Ready
The explosiveness of the intro relates to the theatrics I do onstage. I tend to select tracks that I can perform to.
The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Machinedrum: DDD
A lil classic this one, but still doing it. This guy’s a living legend to me, almost anything he does will make thousands of people dance. And I’m not talking about mosh-pitting or fist-pumping-in-the-moment kind of stuff; the crowd’s reaction just feels much more honest and soulful. Drops are all right but grooves are forever.
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Kanye West: Blood On The Leaves
It sums up the last years: from making Higher Ground in London with Hudson Mohawke and Jacques Greene and friends vibing out in the room all drunk, to it becoming this thing that’s ripped to the internet and becoming a classic before it’s out. Then to Kanye picking it up. I usually play this to chart the full story. From the Nina Simone sample, into Kanye, into “rewind”, then into the original track, R U Ready; it’s loaded for me. It’s definitely a moment.
The track I think has been unfairly slept on this year
S-Type: Lost Girls
Drake took this, and it meant it sat for a long time without getting the shine it deserves. S-Type is a Scottish producer making the most proper rap beats I’ve ever heard. I’ve learnt a lot from him. His sense of melody and composition is pure.
The track I wish I’d signed to my label
French Fries: Champagne
When French Fries played me this track years ago while I was in Paris I couldn’t believe how clean and crisp it was. I’m a fanatic of simplicity.
The ideal festival track
Nicki Minaj Feat Lil Herb: Chiraq
Bottled energy. Nothing over the top here. It’s all sinister and just around the corner on this track. They’re seen as ignorant at times but it’s about as proper rap as I want to hear. I’d love to work with them.
The track I’d play at my funeral
Miles Davis: Autumn Leaves
Miles changed the direction of music four times in his career. Something I can only aspire to. We’ve already done this on the low with the early edits we made of pop stuff; a lot of people are doing that now. And course, that record with HudMo, which now sounds like a lot of people on Soundcloud. This track is about that: legacy. It got me deeply into bop in my early years in high school. It’s meant the most to me ever since.
