Luke Williams delivers scathing Notts County verdict after their 3-1 win over Altrincham

Notts County boss Luke Williams has insisted his side "need to improve", despite defeating Altrincham 3-1 on Saturday.

Macaulay Langstaff's quick brace and Adam Chicksen's second half goal handed the Magpies their sixth win in seven games to lift them above Chesterfield into second place.

Notts did look on course to finish the weekend top of the National League, but Wrexham's late penalty at Oldham ensured the Welsh side will be the league leaders when they visit Meadow Lane on Tuesday.

Despite controlling large parts of the contest, Williams was left disappointed with his side's performance and vented his frustration at "some bad habits" in the game. Speaking after the victory, he said: "I was disappointed. We were lethargic, we were sloppy and got caught.

"I didn't enjoy it. I thought the opposition were outstanding. They made us suffer a lot and if they'd taken their chances early on, the game would have been very different. We have some belief because we always create chances, so that belief saw us through. Possibly, the opposition, having a tough season, the belief is the other way round. They were excellent and they made it really tough for us. We fell into some bad habits.

"I don't think we applied enough pressure to the ball and we were sloppy in our build-up play, which hasn't been something we've been seeing recently. I hope it was a blip. I give a lot of credit to the opposition for forcing us into mistakes, but I think most of them were avoidable. We need to improve."

Williams did credit Langstaff for his sixth brace of the season. The striker has been on red hot form since signing from Gateshead and the County boss has praised the 25-year-old.

"It's impossible to speak highly of him because he's scored 14 in 11, it's an incredible return.

"He deserves it because he works hard, he's always in the right place and he's brave. Another fantastic return."
