BOSTON _ Luke Voit's transition from languishing, minor-league first baseman to a key, right-handed power bat continued for the playoff-bound Yankees.
In the final regular-season game of the year, Voit clubbed a two-run shot _ his 14th home run since Aug. 24 _ during the Red Sox's 10-2 win at Fenway Park.
Over his final 11 games of the season, Voit hit safely in 10 of them, driving in at least one run nine times.
Acquired from the Cardinals in a trade deadline deal for pitchers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos, Voit blitzed past incumbent first baseman Greg Bird.
The lefty-hitting Bird opened the season on the disabled list, recovering from a second right ankle surgery, and never got on track batting .199 in 82 games.
Incidentally, Boone became the sixth-manager all-time _ a group including Boston's Alex Cora this year _ to lead his team to a 100-victory season in his rookie campaign.
Ralph Houk was the only other Yankees manager to accomplish that feat, going 109-53 with the 1961 world champions.
These two clubs could meet again next Friday for the best-of-five Division Series opener, if the Yankees (100-62) get past the Oakland Athletics in Wednesday night's AL wild card game at Yankee Stadium.
And lefty ace Chris Sale will be waiting, as the Game 1 starter for the AL East champion Red Sox (108-54).
But for Sunday's regular season finale, a conveyor belt of pitchers appeared on the Fenway mound, beginning with Luis Cessa.
The Yankees' right-hander didn't last long, yielding four runs in one-third of an inning and exiting after colliding with ex-Yankee Eduardo Nunez in a play at first base.
While covering the bag, Cessa became tangled with Nunez and both players went down. Nunez got up and remained in the game and Cessa threw a few warm-ups before leaving.
