Luke Shaw sends message to Man Utd teammates ahead of crunch Roma clash

Luke Shaw says Manchester United must use their semi-final heartache to push them towards Europa League glory.

United have reached five semi-finals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but have yet to make it to a final under him after most recently being defeated 2-0 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semis.

Solskjaer's side aim to clear that hurdle when they face Roma on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final, with Shaw confident they can make it through.

United's boss said: “First and foremost, no semi-final is easy, they're always tough games and we've just missed out on a few.

“We've had a lot of disappointment from that and can use it as motivation from the way we felt after and put things right.

“It's two legs, so it will be half-time after this game, but the first leg is very important, we've had a few days to prepare and we want to win this trophy.”

Shaw, now in his seventh year at United, is enjoying the best season of his career and paid tribute to Solskjaer when asked why he was thriving this term.

“A lot of things,” said Shaw. “One of them is the manager. And I'm not just saying that because he's sat next to me!

“I've changed a lot of things myself, I believe in myself more and I'n more confident. I'm just enjoying playing football again and that is important - you need to enjoy it.

“The team is going in the right direction and I want to be a part of it. There's competition all over the squad and I want to keep playing and pushing to get trophies.

“This season has been my best, I'm enjoying it, but I can get my head down and keep getting better.”
