Luke Shaw justifies surprising Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claim with Manchester derby heroics

Luke Shaw backed up Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's surprising claim with his well-taken goal in Manchester United's 2-0 victory at Manchester City.

The left-back had a starring role in Sunday's Manchester derby and doubled United's lead in the 50th minute.

Shaw received the ball from Marcus Rashford on the left of the penalty area and fired into the far bottom corner, leaving City goalkeeper Ederson rooted to the spot.

The 25-year-old's first goal of the season capped a fine display in which he also kept a clean sheet.

It also justified Solskjaer's remarkable claim about Shaw, which the latter opened up about earlier this season.

Asked who is the best finisher at Manchester United, Shaw told Sky Sports : "You should ask the manager this one. It would be quite interesting to see who he says."

He added: "He normally says me. I understand what people think, I don't score many goals and this and that.

"But he's actually said to me before that I was one of them (the best finishers).

"And you can hold me to this - you can ask him, someone can ask him when they next do an interview.

"He has said that to me before. I don't know if he was being nice or not."

Shaw has scored three goals across his 246 senior appearances for United, Southampton and England, so he is by no means prolific in front of goal.

But the Saints academy graduate has been a creative force for the Red Devils this season and has contributed the third-most assists of any player in the squad with six.

Solskjaer was full of praise for the full-back after the Manchester derby and said: "When he go forwards on those runs he's unstoppable."
