Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach, Luis Enrique, has remained tight-lipped about star striker Kylian Mbappé's readiness for the upcoming Champions League clash with Real Sociedad. Mbappé has been nursing a sore left ankle and was left unused in PSG's league game against Lille on Saturday.

When asked if Mbappé was ready to start in the first leg of their last-16 contest against Sociedad, Enrique tersely replied, 'Yes' during the pre-match news conference. Despite lingering uncertainties about his future, as Mbappé's contract with PSG expires in June, reports have heavily linked him with a move to his long-time suitor, Real Madrid.

Although speculations are rampant that Wednesday's match at Parc des Princes could potentially be Mbappé's last home game for PSG in the Champions League, Enrique dismissed the notion, stating, 'That is not how I feel about it.'

PSG leads Ligue 1 by 11 points, Sociedad is seventh in La Liga.

While PSG currently holds an 11-point lead in the French league, Sociedad sits only seventh in the Spanish league. However, the competition in Spain is generally stronger, and Ligue 1 has not produced a credible title rival this season. In recent years, PSG has faced disappointment in the Champions League, with five last-16 eliminations in the past seven seasons.

Enrique, perhaps aiming to relieve some pressure off his players, opted not to answer questions about PSG being favored to advance against Sociedad, emphasizing that the favorite must prove itself on the field. The PSG coach is focused on changing his players' mental approach and encourages them to stay as relaxed as possible during crucial matches.

PSG's current squad appears more modest and downplays any obligations or pressures to win the Champions League. Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz says, 'We don’t feel obliged to win it (the Champions League), but we want to win it. We don’t feel any particular pressure or obligation… we feel calm.'

Ruiz, who previously played in Serie A for Napoli, acknowledges Sociedad's tactical prowess as a strong 'counter-pressing' side. Enrique also praises the work of his counterpart, Imanol Alguacil, who has been in charge of Sociedad since 2018.

While PSG had some difficulties in the group stage, losing twice, and barely qualifying for the last 16, Sociedad finished unbeaten at the top of their group, ahead of Inter Milan. Enrique acknowledges Sociedad's defensive strength, as they are one of the teams that concede the least goals in the Champions League, making it clear that PSG should not expect any gifts from their opponents.

As PSG faces off against Sociedad, all eyes remain on their performance in the Champions League as a true indicator of their level. With a history of falling short in key matches, PSG aims to redefine their image and prove themselves on the continental stage.

It remains to be seen whether Mbappé's sore left ankle will hinder his participation in the critical match, but Enrique's terse affirmation suggests that he will be ready to start. PSG fans hope that their star striker can contribute to a successful European campaign as the team seeks to rectify past disappointments and make a lasting impact in the Champions League.
