Luis Diaz new Liverpool squad number confirmed as classy gesture explained

Luis Diaz will wear one of Liverpool’s most famous shirt numbers in 2023/24 after the Reds’ confirmed the Colombian as the club’s new number seven.

The forward has worn the number 23 shirt since he joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022. But he will now succeed James Milner as the Reds’ number seven following the veteran’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The club have confirmed that the forward will personally reimburse supporters who have already purchased the 2023/24 replica home jersey printed with the name 'Luis Diaz' and the number '23' on the back, offering a like-for-like exchange for a 'Luis Diaz 7' shirt.

Any 'Luis Diaz 23' shirts and kit exchanged will be retained by the club and donated to LFC Foundation, with terms and conditions to qualify for a shirt exchange available on the club’s official website.

As well as following in the footsteps of Milner, the likes of club legends Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish are the most famous owners of Liverpool’s number seven shirt, with Steve McManaman and Luis Suarez the most memorable holders during the Premier League era prior to Milner.

Having worn the number seven shirt for both Porto and Colombia in the past, Diaz had long-since been touted to succeed Milner. The forward isn’t the only player tipped for a new shirt this summer, however, with Darwin Nunez reportedly in line to replace Roberto Firmino as the Reds’ new number nine.
