Lucas Leiva makes Roberto Firmino prediction as Liverpool forward closes in on Reds history

Former Liverpool favourite Lucas Leiva has predicted that Roberto Firmino will smash the Reds record he holds.

The Lazio midfielder made 346 appearances during his decade on Merseyside which is the most of any Brazilian player to play for Liverpool.

Lucas thinks Firmino will obliterate the record he set during a ten-year spell at Anfield, with the attacker having played 228 times since his arrival in 2015.

The 33-year-old told DAZN as cited here: "I have the record for appearances for a Brazilian.

"But I think Firmino will surpass me because he plays 50 games a season. I am glad, he is an incredible boy."

Earlier this season Firmino surpassed former team-mate Philippe Coutinho in appearances made, with the Bayern Munich playmaker having featured 201 times before his 2018 departure.

Lucas also went on to detail the difficulties he endured when he was signed by Rafa Benitez from Gremio back in 2007.

Initially joining as an attacking midfielder, Lucas was transitioned into a defensive midfielder by the Spanish boss.

"It was really difficult at the beginning in Liverpool," Leiva said.

"It was a slow adaptation, luckily there was a lot of Spanish players playing for Liverpool, my manager, Rafa Benitez was Spanish too, so their Latin personality helped me a lot as I didn't speak English at the time.

"My first and second years were really hard, at times I thought it wasn't going to work out, but slowly things changed, I started accomplishing things.

"I was adapting myself. After learning the language, you feel better not only in the club but also in the city."

Nowadays, Lucas has become a star-man for Italian side Lazio - making 22 appearances in all competitions this season.
