Why Vanderbilt Will Win
The passing game started to work against Purdue. It might have been a 42-24 loss, and the defense struggled too much, but Riley Neal was able to bomb away for close to 11 yards per pass with 378 yards.
As good as the LSU defense might be overall, it got hit for over 400 yards by Sam Ehlinger in the shootout against Texas, and gave up to touchdown passes in the sleepy first half against Northwestern State.
Even with all of the NFL talent among the Tiger defensive backs, the defense has yet to come up with a pick. Neal and the Commodore offense have to bomb away and take a whole lot of chances, and they have to avoid mistakes.
So far, the Vandy offense only turned it over twice, and while it has shown a little explosion …
Why LSU Will Win
Vanderbilt can’t keep the offense moving. It’s not converting on third downs, and the team hasn’t been sharp enough overall to hang with the strong teams on the slate so far.
The Commodores have to be perfect to pull this off, but they’re not that, getting flagged ten times in the loss to Georgia, and 13 times in the Purdue game two weeks ago. The biggest problem, though, is a secondary that just got torched.
Georgia’s Jake Fromm didn’t do too much in the opener, but that was partly because the running game worked. When he wanted to throw, though, he didn’t have any problems. Purdue and Elijah Sindelar went for 509 yards through the air, and that’s where Joe Burrow comes in.
There’s no Vandy pass rush to worry about, and Burrow should be able to take target practice. The Heisman candidate is completing 83% of his throws averaging close to 13 yards per pass. He won’t have a problem keeping that going.

What’s Going To Happen
Does Vanderbilt have anything special to throw at the Tigers? If it does, it hasn’t shown it so far in its first two games.
It’s a rested team with enough offensive talent to come up with a good offensive performance, but so far, it’s not doing enough right to hope to take down a rolling LSU team.
Being at home will help a little bit, but the Tigers have yet to unleash their ground game. They’ll do that a bit this week, but Burrow will the star once again. It’ll take a half to get over the hump, but LSU will dominate the final 30 minutes.
