Low calorie Friday night treat alternatives to enjoy without feeling guilty

Friday night is 'treat night' for many households across NI.

And once the last hour of the working week is done - our attention usually turns to food and drink.

Tough decisions for the night ahead often include pizza or Chinese? Chocolate or crisps? Or even, one bottle or two?

But if you've been thinking about being kinder to your body and making wiser decisions when it comes to what we consume - there are low calorie snack options available.

Instead of overdoing it tonight - then vowing to dedicate your life to clean eating and hydration on Monday morning - select your snacks wisely.

Here's a round-up of three low calorie Friday night treat options to consider this weekend.

1. Halo Top Ice cream

Halo Top ice cream is a low calorie alternative to traditional style ice cream.

What makes the brand so popular with consumers who are watching their weight is that the calorie contents of the whole tub is marked on the front of the packaging.

So you could in theory finish the whole tub of ice cream without having to feel guilty.

One entire 473ml tub of Halo Top ice cream could contain as little as 320 calories - depending on the flavour - which works out as 68 kcal per 100ml.

Whereas other popular brand ice cream tubs that you can purchase from your local supermarket can contain more than three times the amount of calories per 100ml.

2. Popcorn

According to Healthline, popcorn is packed with important nutrients and is high with fibre.

And although some popcorn packets from your local supermarket can be high in sugar - there are plenty of low sugar, low calorie versions available to satisfy for your sweet tooth.

Brands like 'Proper Corn' offer sweet flavoured popcorn packets containing 65 kcals and 4.1g of sugar per serving.

And if you're after something salty to satisfy your cravings - the lightly sea salted flavoured Proper Corn has 42 kcals and only 0.1g of sugar (and 0.14g of salt) per serving.

3. Tortilla chips

Another alternative for a salty snack is lightly salted tortilla chips.

Instead of getting to the bottom of a sharing packet of your favourite crisps - do a healthy swap from a cheap packet of supermarket own brand lightly salted tortilla chips.

Tesco's lightly salted tortilla chips contain 125 kcal per serving, Asda's lightly salted tortilla chips contain 121 kcal per serving and Sainsbury's lightly salted tortilla chips contain 142k cal per serving.
