Love Island's Scott Thomas speaks candidly about battle with alcohol as he celebrates six months of sobriety

Love Island star Scott Thomas has opened up about his struggles with alcohol abuse in a candid new video.

Posting on Instagram, Scott, who runs the Manchester-based Social PR, shared a video of himself talking about his behind-the-scenes struggle to overcome his dependence on drinking.

Scott revealed he would often get so drunk that he’d get kicked out of his own events, and he would have little memory of nights out.

“People would see me on a night out and go, ‘You was off your head last night’,” he said.

“I was like, 'Wow, I don’t even remember that'. It wasn’t me, and it really got me down for years when people thought I was something I wasn’t.”

Scott, who recently celebrated being sober for six months, revealed that an incident in December 2019 almost cost him his business.

“Last year at Christmas, I had a blow out that nearly cost me a client, it nearly cost me my business, my relationships with my team, my business partner,” he said.

“These blow outs, my body was telling me, ‘This isn’t for you anymore. You are capable of so much better and every time you want to go out and drink, I’m going to punish you'.”

Special moment for me today! Celebrating 6 months no alcohol and finally reaching my goal of the best shape of my life ❤️🙏🎉 - Before I go on I just want to say massive thank you to my PT @antonyteasdale4 for getting me to this point ❤️💪 -This may come as a surprise to a lot of you as it’s not something I’ve often talked about. For years I’ve always battled with my relationship to alcohol. I made a living out of being a party boy and although I didn’t drink often when I did I would always take it too far and become a different person. I’ve battled with this for years and although I’ve not had a bad life at all and always done “well” so to speak there was always an underlying feeling of not reaching my potential. I saw a therapist for years over this called Gareth at @menshouldtalk who was a massive help in giving me perspective and I still check in with him once a month even now. - - At the back end of last year I made a decision to go T total in 2020 for 12 months. A decision that had to be made because for the first time my behaviour had affected my business. To see something that I’ve worked hard for jeopardised because of my behaviour was a massive eye opener for me. This was a personal weakness I knew I had to get on top of to reach the level of success that I wanted so badly. I booked a holiday to Abu Dhabi on my own and had a serious word with myself over there. Picked up a pebble 😆 and stood in the sea and swore to myself I’d do 12 months. It was a scary thought but I was listening to Denzel Washington on repeat “to achieve something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done!” 💫 - 6 months down the line and I’m in a much better place. Everyday I wake up feeling unstoppable and I’m moving towards my goals. Making things happen in my personal life and business that I’ve always never found the time to do. Im not sitting here preaching to people about not drinking because I was different it was a weakness of mine. But what I am saying is if you do have a problem in your life that’s holding you back only YOU can get on top of it and yes it won’t be easy. But trust me when you do you will reap all the rewards 💪❤️

After seeking the help of a therapist, Scott said he took a solo trip to Abu Dhabi, where he promised himself that he would try 12 months sober.

“I just started crying basically, because I knew that was a life changing moment for me,” he said.

And while he was worried he would be perceived as “boring,” he has so far had no regrets.

“It’s been the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said. “It’s not easy. It’s been a test. I feel unstoppable now. Every single day I wake up and I know I’m moving towards my goal.”

In his caption for the video, Scott said he hoped his story would inspire others to confront their issues.

“I hope this video can help someone this morning to make a big decision they’ve been battling with because if you do your whole life can change,” he wrote.

Scott appeared in the second series of ITV2's Love Island reboot, which aired in 2016.

Having coupled up with Kady McDermott, he made it to the final and the pair finished in third place.

They continued their relationship after leaving the villa but split in late 2017.
