Love Island could face Ofcom investigation after receiving 797 complaints over the weekend

Love Island could face an investigation by Ofcom after it was inundated with hundreds of complaints over the weekend.

The broadcasting watchdog has said that it has received 797 complaints since Friday about the ITV2 show over two particular issues and will "assess" them against broadcasting rules.

The majority of the complaints relate to new Islander Maura Higgins' advances towards Tommy Fury.

Maura was seen in Friday's episode trying to woo Tommy and get him to kiss her but the 20-year-old politely pulled away and declined her offer - this attracted 486 complaints.

A further 302 criticised the contestants treatment of Lucie Donlan.

The 22-year-old surfer has been facing backlash from her fellow Islander's for being "distant", choosing to spend more time with the boys than the girls.

This led to love interest Joe Garrett pulling her aside in Sunday night's episode after she larked around with Tommy Fury - who she was originally in a love triangle with.

Whilst Lucie claimed nothing was going on with the pro boxer, Joe said she should be 'respecting the one she was with'.

An Ofcom spokeswoman said: "We will assess these complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."
