Love Island 2019: Marcel Somerville says he's having 'flashbacks' as Sherif, Yewande and Michael all left unpicked

Marcel Somerville said he was having “flashbacks” after Sherif Lanre, Yewande Biala and Michael Griffiths were left unpicked during Love Island’s first coupling.

The trio, with Sherif and Michael on the “subs” bench, were coupled up during the opening episode but ended up being swiftly dumped as other guys entered.

Scientist Yewande wasn’t picked by any of the five guys and was instead left to partner with Michael. Sherif picked Anna Vakili.

Somerville, who starred on the show in 2017, told fans that he was having “flashbacks” as he recalled his opening day on Love Island, with no girl stepping forward to couple up with him.

He tweeted: “This is mad!!!! #LoveIsland flash backs! Black guy, black girl and mixed race guy all left unpicked. Mad!!!”

Somerville coupled up with eventual winner Amber Davies before being relegated to the subs bench when Harley Judge came in.

Some fans agreed with Somerville’s observations, saying that it was the “same story every year,” while others branded it “ridiculous”.

Others suggested the trio had only been left behind because they didn't have an “attraction”, pointing out how Yewande actually failed to step forward for anybody.

Somerville replied to one fan who accused him of “throwing out the race card”, saying: “Didn’t throw a card just made an observation. Was my observation a lie?”

He told another: “I just made an observation that has been a problem for the last few years! I didn’t call anyone racist! People fancy who they fancy fact but the reality is the coincidence is insane.”

Love Island series five kicked off on Monday night, with 10 singletons pairing up for the first time. But their budding romances were soon thrown into jeopardy as two new guys – Tommy Fury and Curtis Pritchard – entered the villa, charged with charming the ladies.

Sherif was branded “creepy” by viewers after he told Anna that he follows her on Instagram – and was a big fan.

“Genuinely. I wasn’t going to say out there!” he told a shocked looking Anna, who wasn’t quite sure whether to be flattered or not.

“He just brought it out so casually. Like ‘Yeah I follow you on Instagram,’” she said in the Beach Hut.

“I was flattered but I didn’t expect it coming in here, that someone would follow me on Instagram. When I do go out, I do tend to get that a lot.”

Love Island is on ITV2, tonight at 9pm
