'Love him!' - Manchester United fans hail Ralf Rangnick after making shock Tom Heaton decision

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick surprised everyone during the Reds' UEFA Champions League clash with Young Boys at Old Trafford this evening, handing goalkeeper Tom Heaton his debut from the substitutes bench.

With 68 minutes on the clock, Rangnick, bizarrely, called for Heaton to replace Dean Henderson and earn his first appearance in United colours, despite the shot-stopper now being in his second spell at Old Trafford.

Henderson was not carrying any injury when he left the field, suggesting that the move was planned ahead of kick-off.

With United's place in the last-16 already secured ahead of kick-off, Rangnick, seeking his second win in as many games, made the decision to rotate his pack from the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, making 11 changes.

Henderson replaced David de Gea between the sticks and was expected to complete the full 90 minutes. However, Rangnick threw a a spanner in the works with just over 20 minutes to go, calling on Heaton.

Despite the surprise, United's supporters welcomed the decision, praising Rangnick for giving the goalkeeper, who is now 35, the opportunity to don United colours for the first time.

Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what some United supporters had to say on social media.

As you can see from the messages displayed above, United's supporters have hailed Rangnick for the decision, suggesting that it was a really nice touch from the German, who made the decision to hand out as many opportunities as possible to squad players and youngsters.

Heaton returned to Old Trafford in the summer following his exit from Aston Villa to provide support to both De Gea and Henderson.

The former Cardiff City shot-stopper started his career at Old Trafford and left the club in 2010, joining the Bluebirds.
