Louth mum Grainne McCullough launches fundraising campaign to help her young son with brain damage

A mother has begun fundraising so her five-year-old son with brain damage can see a neurologist.

Grainne McCullough said Bryan, who is known as Bru, suffered life-changing injuries after he contracted sepsis in 2017.

And nearly two years later, he has still not been referred to a neurologist.

Grainne, from Drogheda, Co Louth, said: “I have asked for him to be referred but we are not even at the start of the waiting lists yet.

“His brain is still developing so to see a neurologist now is so important. He has suffered beyond words and my heart is broken for him.”

As a result of sepsis Bru can no longer walk or talk and also has cerebral palsy. He also risks choking every time he eats. Grainne wants to ensure a neurologist examines him so he can have early
intervention and treatment to improve his quality of life.

Bru requires full-time care and attends a special school.

Last year Grainne was over the moon when MMA star Conor McGregor made a private donation of €10,000 which paid for a feeding tube to be put directly into Bru’s stomach.

She said it made a difference straight away as Bru kept pulling out the nasal feeding tube.

Now the dedicated mum has begun fundraising again for private treatment.

She said: “As a public patient the waiting lists can be years long. If I had enough money there are appointments we could get in the UK within weeks.

“I cannot believe we are on this road again, he is just another ‘file’ put at the bottom, there really is only so much a person can take, my heart is broke.”
