Louis van Gaal on transfer advice he gave during 'storm' amid Cody Gakpo Leeds United links

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal has addressed speculation regarding Cody Gakpo's future at PSV. The Dutch boss reportedly held talks with the up and coming talent and convinced him to stay at his current club, despite links with Leeds United and Southampton in the summer with Manchester United are also reportedly tracking the Dutch international.

Van Gaal has not directly addressed those claims but admits that he has had conversations with players with the 'storm now over.'

“Many players have called me, that is indeed true. I have always ended the conversations with the words: this is advice, you should always stay close to yourself and make the choice yourself. The storm is now over, and I must say that it has been pleasing to me,” Van Gaal was quoted in De Telegraaf.

His comments come just days after PSV chief Marcel Brands admitted that the Whites had made the best approach for Gakpo. It looked as though Leeds United would welcome the Dutch star on deadline day, with Andrea Radrizzani tweeting that the club were hoping to get a deal over the line.

“It was €30m plus €13m, of which €2m were realistic," Brands told Voetbal international. "For example, we would get €6m if they made it to the Champions League.

"Bonuses are only good for me if they are realistic. This was the very best offer and we all said no to that."
