Lotto fever takes hold with highest jackpot of the year this weekend

The highest Lotto jackpot of 2023 is up for grabs tonight as it now stands at €12million.

Lotto fever is growing across the country after no one picked up the top prize of €11.6m in Saturday’s draw.

A National Lottery spokeswoman said: “Could this be a record-breaking weekend for a Lotto player dreaming of winning big?

“Saturday night’s jackpot will be the biggest seen in the game this year.”

Players are being reminded the cut-off time for ticket sales is 7.45pm this evening, with tickets available to be bought in shops or online.

A shop in Castlebar, Co Mayo, holds the title of selling the biggest winning ticket worth €19.06m which was scooped by a family syndicate in January 2022.

Since the Lotto game launched in 1988, only 28 jackpots in excess of €10million have been won.

New National Lottery research reveals how 20% of Irish people say they would keep it a secret if they won a life-changing sum of money.

Just 2% said that they would openly tell everyone while over half would only confide in close family members if they ever won big.

Research showed 38% would tell their partner first, while 25% would tell their mum, but only 4% would say it to their dad before anyone else.

And with their winnings, one-fifth said they would head Stateside with the next most popular destinations being Australia, the Caribbean and the Maldives.
